Fertility Sparing Surgery for Management of Serous Cystadenoma: Surgical Technique and Follow Up

Islam Fahmi, Mili Thakur, Ahmed Abdelaziz, Mohammed Ashraf and Mostafa I. Abuzeid

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: June 14, 2015

Ovarian cysts are commonly encountered adnexal masses by gynecologists, with a reported incidence of 5-15% of all reproductive age women. Large ovarian cysts are usually treated by surgical excision with cystectomy or oophorectomy. Laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy in large ovarian cysts has been underutilized. This report discusses the surgical technique of fertility sparing laparoscopic cystectomy for serous cystadenoma and subsequent follow up of these patients....

Extensive Hemorrhage during C-section of a Placenta Percreta with Bladder Invasion - Case Report

Rodrigo Dias Nunes, Djulie Anne de Lemos Zanatta and Natalia Vidal Lucena

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: June 08, 2015

Morbidly Adherent Placenta is a clinical condition where the placental tissue implants abnormally to the myometrium. In rare situations, the placenta can pass through the myometrium and invade organs surrounding the uterus; this is referred to as Placenta Percreta. This high morbidity condition can lead to a massive hemorrhage during surgery along with other various complications. We report a case of a 35 year old woman with no previous diagnosis of Placenta Percreta. During C-section, extensive placental invasion of the bladder and massive hemorrhaging was identified....

Non-Invasive Assessment of Cardiac Autonomic Functions in Healthy Young Adults in Ile-Ife, South-Western Nigeria

Oluwadare Ogunlade, Abiodun O Ayoka, Anthony Akintomide, Rufus Ojo Akomolafe, Olumide S Akinsomisoye and David Oyewusi Oyebola

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: June 10, 2015

Background: This study assessed the responses of Blood Pressure (BP) and Heart Rate (HR) to change of posture, Sustained Handgrip (SH),deep breathing(DB) and Valsalva manoeuvre (VM) in order to determining the normal limits and pattern of Autonomic Cardiovascular Indices (ACI) among healthy young adults. Methods: Two hundred and four volunteer (98 men and 106 women) aged 18-40 years (mean, 22.45 +/- 4.86 years) participated in the study. After excluding systemic diseases by clinical evaluation, each participant performed fie non-invasive cardiac autonomic function tests in series....

Feasibility of Focused Cardiac Ultrasound in Pre-participation Screening

Miriam L. Fishman, Jennifer Shea, Brian G. Choi and Allen J. Solomon

Article Type: Original Research | First Published: May 29, 2015

Objective: Current American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines for pre-participation athletic screening recommend a 12-point history and exam to minimize the risk of sudden cardiac death. We tested the hypothesis that focused cardiac ultrasound (FCU) performed and simultaneously interpreted by a cardiologist using a handheld ultrasound device would be a feasible addition. Methods: We performed pre-participation screening according to AHA recommendations on high school athletes in a multi-purpose room at their school....

Aminophylline does not Prevent Postdural Puncture Headache in Caesarean Section

Ismail Sirit, Ibrahim Ozturk, Dilek Yazicioglu

Article Type: Original Research | First Published: June 20, 2015

We aimed to investigate that whether intraoperative intravenous aminophylline is effective for prevention of postdural puncture headache after caesarean section or not. Materials and method: Records of patients who underwent caesarean section between January, 2013 and November, 2013 with spinal anesthesia were examined retrospectively. Patients older than 18 were included in the study. Failed and conversion to general anesthesia was the exclusion criteria....

Challenges of Fertility Sparing Ovarian Surgery Imposed by Krukenberg Tumors in Pregnancy

Michael H. Bloch, Ramey Z. Elsarrag, Mazin Z. Elsarrag and Sana M. Salih

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: June 29, 2015

Fertility sparing surgery is advocated for reproductive-age women with benign and borderline ovarian tumors. The hormonal milieu of pregnancy may, however, complicate the decision making process. The patient presented in the third trimester with a rapidly growing tumor that was diagnosed as benign steroid cell tumor by intraoperative frozen section. Fertility-sparing surgery with right oophorectomy and partial left oophorectomy was performed....

Acute Ovarian Insufficiency and Uterine Infarction Following Uterine Artery Embolization for Postpartum Hemorrhage

Sarah Z. Elsarrag, Abigail R. Forss, Susan Richman and Sana M. Salih

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: June 29, 2015

Uterine artery embolization for intractable postpartum hemorrhage saves lives while preserving fertility. The procedure-related risks of uterine infarction and ovarian insufficiency are rare. A primparous patient underwent bilateral internal hypogastric artery embolization to control severe postpartum hemorrhage following primary cesarean section. The bleeding continued, and a repeat aortogram demonstrated significant filing of the uterus from an anomalous proximal take off of the right uterine artery and from the left ovarian artery....

Dental Stem Cells Characterization and Bone Regenerative Potential in Oral Medicine

Ricardo Rodrigues, Barbara Viana, Ivo Vieira, Joao Tavares, Renato Lobo, Ana Portela and Mario Vasconcelos

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: June 02, 2015

The oral cavity has proven to be an important reservoir of stem cells with the advantage of being a non-invasive source. These cells potential for maxillo-facial bone regeneration has been well documented throughout the last five years. This article aims at reviewing and discussing the different types of dental stem cells available in the oral cavity, their lineage characterization and potential applications in oral medicine; cell collection, isolation and preservation; bone regenerative potential comparison between dental stem cells and bone marrow stem cells; and various factors affecting bo...

Orbital Apex Cavernous Hemangioma Causing a Temporal Visual Field Deficit

Ashley A. Campbell, Suzanne K. Freitag, Benjamin S. Bleier, Simmons Lessell and Dean M. Cestari

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: June 23, 2015

We present a case of compressive optic neuropathy from a small hemangioma in the orbital apex causing a mostly temporal visual field defect with some extension nasally on the pattern deviation plot. Given the visual field defect, the location of this lesion was expected to be in the anterior chiasm or prechiasmal optic nerve. This case supports the hypothesis that the organization of temporal visual field fibers likely occurs at the level of the distal optic nerve prior to entering the anterior chiasm....

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: June 23, 2015

Aim: The aim of this case report is to demonstrate the efficacy of the combination of two techniques of dental bleaching (inside and outside) to deal with the aesthetics of the smile. Material and methods: The intra-bucal examination showed the presence of a fistula in the vestibular region of the tooth 11 and a darkening of the tooth crown....
