Time and Motion Study Assessment of Simulated Rapid Sequence Intubation

Trung Du, David Bramley, Justin Nazareth and David T Andrews

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: December 29, 2014

We carried out an observational study using a system of time and motion analysis that was developed to critically evaluate work systems by correlating the number and type of hand and equipment movements that were associated with the time taken to perform the stereotypical anaesthetic technique of rapid sequence intubation (RSI). The number and type of hand movements required to complete RSI exhibited significant correlation with, and were linearly related to, the time taken to carry out the RSI ...

Robotic Surgery, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and Difficult Airway - A Challenging Combination for the Anesthesiologist! : A Case Report

Uma Hariharan, Shagun Bhatia Shah and Binod Kumar Naithani

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: December 23, 2014

The introduction of robotic surgery has heralded new challenges for the anesthesiologists. The daVinci TM robotic system provides a three-dimensional view and better work ergonomics for the surgeon, especially in complex and radical cancer surgeries. Innovation of robotic surgery has opened the doors for newer concerns in patient safety for the anesthesia team. This is of greater importance in patients with concurrent serious conditions like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The challenge becomes gre...

We analyzed 53 HIV-infected patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) diagnosed at our institution from 1998 to 2012. All patients were coinfected with hepatitis virus (77% HCV; 12% HBV; 11% HCV+HBV), and 95% had liver cirrhosis. HCC was diagnosed under surveillance in 41% of patients. Potentially curative therapy was given to 32% of patients and palliative therapy to 30% patients. Median survival was 2 months in those diagnosed from 1998 to 2005, and 11 months in those diagnosed from 2006 to...

The Superhero Drugs for Choroidal Neovascularization; Anti-VEGF Agents

Abdullah Ozkaya

Article Type: Editorial | First Published: October 29, 2014

A decade ago, the treatment of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to various macular diseases like age related macular degeneration, pathologic myopia, and angioid streaks was a crucial challenge. Laser photocoagulation could might be performed for juxtafoveal and extrafoveal CNVs and different surgical treatment options like macular translocation surgery and subretinal CNV excision were available. Th published studies usually were about neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nA...

Management of Early Pregnancy Failure in a Patient with Pancytopenia

Diana Cholakian and Jenell Coleman

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: December 08, 2014

The safest and most effective therapy for an early pregnancy failure in women with pancytopenia is unknown. Here, we present a case report of a patient diagnosed with a 10-week embryonic demise who had a rare hematologic disorder called TnPolyagglutination syndrome that caused pancytopenia. The patient was offered expectant, medical, or surgical management, and she chose outpatient vaginal misoprostol. A week later, the patient presented to the emergency room with a septic abortion. She was give...

Single Incision Laparoscopy (SIL) is a promising technique in the context of minimally invasive surgery, since it might improve cosmesis and cause less tissue trauma, if compared to multiple incision laparoscopies. Recent studies have shown its feasibility and safety for the approach of benign diseases. In this article, we report four cases of advanced ovarian cancer, addressed through SIL, with the purpose of fast diagnosis and recovery, allowing prompt onset of chemotherapy....

An Unusual Cause of Transıent Fetal Ascıtes: Fetal Ovarıan Cyst Rupture

Demirpence S

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: December 07, 2014

Background: Ovarian cysts can be diagnosed prenatally and in case of persistence are found in newborns. Most resolve spontaneously, although in a small proportion of cases they can persist and be symptomatic. Fetal ascites may be due to immune or non immune hydrops fetalis or to a series of locoregional problems However, it can be an isolated finding rarely. Case: In this case we reported an isolated fetal ascites case that was caused by fetal ovarian cyst rupture. Conclusion:Fetal hydrops may b...

Experimental Detection of Mitochondrial DNA Insertions in Nuclear Genome of Chicken Embryos Developed from X-Ray Irradiated Eggs

Serazhutdin A. Abdullaev and Azhub I. Gaziev

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: December 08, 2014

The transfer of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) into the nuclear genome is a dynamic process, resulting in the formation of nuclear mitochondrial (numt) pseudogenes or numt-insertions. Experimental determination of de novo numt-insertions is limited by the extensive homology of mtDNA in the nuclear DNA (nDNA) of eukaryotes. Since chicken nDNA contains only 13 numtpseudogenes, we tried to follow experimentally the induction of numt-insertions de novo in the nDNA of chicken (Gallus gallus) embryos devel...

The Differential Diagnosis of Asthma: Endobronchial Pulmonary Mesenchymoma

Mehmet Unlu, Pinar Cimen, Nuran Katgi and Salih Zeki Guclu

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: December 06, 2014

A variety of airway tumours are reported to manifest with symptoms similar to those of asthma and may cause delays in exact diagnosis because of the increase in size at a slow rate. Pulmonary endobronchial mesenchymoma is one of the slow growing tumours which is associated with symptoms or signs of airway obstruction mimicking asthma. So, patients with chronic symptoms suggestive of asthma, poor response to asthma medications, and frequent exacerbations should be evaluated for endobronchial mese...

Article Type: Original Retrospective Study | First Published: October 10, 2014

Background: In patients with Pulmonary Hypertension (PH), the role of overnight oximetry as means to screen for Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) has not been well established. The aim of this study was to assess whether overnight oximetry was additive to a standard sleep questionnaire in the diagnosis of SDB. Methods: This retrospective study included 94 PH patients seen at Mayo Clinic Florida PH Center from 1992 to 2006. Analysis was performed on the following information: age, gender, body mas...
