Blacks have a greater need for kidney transplants than other American ethnic groups. Overrepresented on kidney transplant waiting lists (13%), they account for 35% of those waiting. Recent studies show that Black live donors are at greater risk for kidney failure, (44%) after donation, compared to other ethnicities. Explanations for these live donation data are few. While diabetic, hypertensive or morbidly obese Blacks are excluded as live donors; those overweight or obese are not. Participants ...

Richard M Fleming, PhD, MD, JD, Matthew R. Fleming, BS, Tapan K Chaudhuri, MD, William C Dooley, MD and Andrew McKusick, BS Pharm
Article Type: Commentary | First Published: April 10, 2019
Prior to FMTVDM/BEST Imaging, diagnostic testing was limited to looking for breast cancer either using "qualitative" imaging defining disease as either present or absent, or semiquantitative methods which is also limited to the same yes you have breast cancer or no you don’t interpretation. These imaging methods include mammography, ultrasound, CT, MRI, as well as other SPECT/Planar and PET imaging approaches and as such are associated with sensitivity and specificity problems. These tests are...

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: April 08, 2019
The choice of treatment of carotid artery stenosis is firstly based on assessment of the degree of stenosis and embologeneity of the atherosclerotic plaque. But even in "good-risk" population it is still difficult to identify the patients who are particularly at high threat of stroke and would most benefit from carotid reconstruction. Along with common criteria numerous studies also focus on a prognostic role of a cerebrovascular reserve (CVR) and its state which allows to carry out more objecti...

Functional disorders of the pelvic floor are common healthcare problems owing to increased incidence of obesity, pelvic surgeries, childbirth, heavy physical exertion etc. In the past, fluoroscopic defecography was used in their diagnosis, but it had its limitations like radiation exposure. Endoanal sonography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) were also used to assess the pelvic pathologies but they could not assess the pelvic floor function. Magnetic Resonance Defecography (MRD) is a new mod...

Chernobyl demonstrated that iodine-131 (131I) released in a nuclear accident can cause malignant thyroid nodules to develop in children within a 300 mile radius of the incident. Timely potassium iodide (KI) administration can prevent the development of thyroid cancer and the American Thyroid Association (ATA) and a number of United States governmental agencies recommend KI prophylaxis. Current pre-distribution of KI by the United States government and other governments with nuclear reactors is p...
