Article Type: Case Report | First Published: September 25, 2019

Patellar Tendon (PT) rupture in combination with an anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL) +/- a Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) injury is a rarely reported injury pattern. We report the cases of three athletes who sustained simul-taneous rupture of their PT, ACL and MCL while competing. They were treated in a staged manner with acute pri-mary repair of the patellar tendon and MCL followed by a rehabilitation period. Reconstruction of the ACL was performed once range of motion and strength of ...

Acute Heart Rate Responses to Resistance Exercise at Different Cadences

Marc R Apkarian

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: September 21, 2019

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether movement speed, or cadence, affects the heart rate (HR) response to three sets of 10 repetitions of resistance exercise at slow (6 seconds/repetition) and fast (2 seconds/repetition) cadences. When three sets of 10 repetitions are performed on the angled leg press at a slow cadence, a significant increase in peak HR occurs for the sets, while the fast cadence does not demonstrate an increase in peak HR values. The is presumed in part due to infl...

Radiation Dose Reduction Comparing Dual Axis Rotational Coronary Angiography against Conventional Coronary Angiography in a Population with 100% Suspected Coronary Artery Disease: A Randomized Trial

Jorge Szarfer

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: September 16, 2019

We sought to compare the radiation dose, contrast volume, and procedure time between dual-axis rotational coronary angiography (DARCA) and conventional coronary angiography (CCA) techniques in a setting characterized by a prevalence of 100% suspected coronary artery disease. All-comers, prospective, randomized, open-label trial. Cine acquisition dose-area product (DAP), cumulative Air Kerma (AK), effective dose (E), fluoroscopic time, contrast volume, AK, cine acquisition DAP (CADAP), fluorosco...

Signal Processing Technique for Identifying Pacifier Artifacts in Pediatric Sleep Lab Airflow Data

Padmini Selvaganesan, Michala Dauterman, Ajay Mahajan and Jyoti Krishna

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: September 16, 2019

For diagnosing sleep apnea, patients are required to stay overnight in a sleep lab, and various physiological signals are recorded using different sensors. The data collected during the study is often prone to artifacts due to various reasons and one such artifact in younger patients is due to the use of pacifiers which corrupts the signal from the sensors. One of the sensor signals which is corrupted frequently is the airflow signal. This airflow signal is obtained using a thermistor that is pl...

Denial and Depression in Patients with Digestive System Cancer

Ahmet Topuzoglu, Can Cimilli, Onur Ulas Agdanli and Tolga Binbay

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: September 16, 2019

This research was conducted as a case control study. Denial and depression were assessed in 105 patients with digestive system cancer (n = 36; 34.3% were diagnosed with depression). Denial was assessed using the denial of cancer interview, and depression was investigated using SCID-1 and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Defense mechanisms were assessed using the Defense Mechanism Rating Scale. Patients with depression were less likely to experience denial. Neurotic and immature defense m...

Comparative Immunohistochemical Staining for Chromogranin A and Synaptophysin in Intestinal Carcinoids

Tatsuo Tomita

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: September 16, 2019

Duodenal and ileal carcinoids were strongly positive for CgA, with or without invasion through intestinal wall. Small appendiceal carcinoids were weakly immunostained for CgA and SPY. Colorectal carcinoids were low-grade tumors especially those of small polypoid tumors (< 1.0 cm) with CgA-negative staining while larger tumors (> 2.0 cm) infiltrating through wall were more aggressive with often CgA positive staining. CgA positive carcinoids of duodenum, small intestine and colorectum of larger th...

Although oxaliplatin is one of the main anticancer agents used against colorectal cancer, data on the pharmacokinetics of oxaliplatin in patients on hemodialysis are limited. In this case study, we evaluated the pharmacokinetics and safety of oxaliplatin in a patient on hemodialysis treated for colon cancer. A 68-year-old Japanese woman receiving chronic hemodialysis was treated for metastatic colon cancer with modified FOLFOX6 plus bevacizumab every 2 weeks. Initial oxaliplatin dose was reduc...

Recurrent Idiopathic Orbital Myositis: Two Case Reports

Pinar EROZ and Mehmet Atila Argin

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: September 23, 2019

Idiopathic orbital myositis is a subtype of idiopathic orbital inflammatory diseases characterized by inflammation of the extraocular muscles. The diagnosis of the disease is made clinically and radiologically. Clinically characterized by periorbital edema, ptosis, propitosis, diplopia and painful eye movements. The diagnosis is made by observing the enlargement of the involved muscles in the orbital CT. The most common differential diagnosis is thyroid ophthalmopathy. In this study, we presente...

This report on a 4 week, randomized, placebo controlled, parallel group, repeated measures, double-blind study clinical trial of a preparation containing Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Vinpocetine and Huperzine A administered to healthy volunteers has identified that the product significantly improves a well validated global score from six tests of working and episodic memory, with an effect sized improvement comparable to the current medications approved to treat Alzheimers disease. Procera AVH is a prop...

Endogenous Adaptation to Chronic Mild Hypoxia Shifts the Balance towards Anti-Inflammatory Milieu in Progressive Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Induced EAE

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: September 18, 2019

The mammalian brain depends on a continuous supply of oxygen and glucose to meet metabolic demand. Adaptive mechanisms allow brain cells to exist under conditions of moderately low oxygen when ‘idling’ or exposure to high altitude as well as elevated oxygen delivery when activated. Regulation involves numerous intrinsic and extrinsic adaptive mechanisms that serve to maintain metabolic homeostasis. Under conditions of chronic low oxygen (10%) endogenous changes in CNS angiodynamics help prom...
