Biomarker studies are notorious for their high failure rate. Despite huge investment by both academia and industry, very few biomarkers make the transition from interesting laboratory data to tests with clinical utility. The reasons for this are manifold. Some biomarkers are "true" biomarkers inasmuch as they are robust and reproducible but the information they provide does not help to improve patient management beyond that informed by traditional clinical parameters....

Oral Hygiene Practices among Fixed Orthodontic Patients in a University Dental Setting

Lee Jin Han, Asma Alhusna Abang Abdullah and Nurul Asyikin Yahya

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: April 12, 2016

A self-administered questionnaire was answered by 261 fixed orthodontic patients. The questionnaire addressed two aspects: socio-demographic characteristics and oral hygiene practices. Socio-demographic variables included age, gender, race, level of education, and smoking status. Oral hygiene practices were assessed through questions on the type and frequency use of toothbrush, other cleaning measures used daily and professional mechanical tooth cleaning (PMTC) during the orthodontic treatment p...

Ozcan Kayikcioglu, Sinan Bilgin and Mahmut Oguz Ulusoy

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: May 13, 2016

In this report, we aimed to determine wound leakage by instillation of trypan blue onto main incision and side port incisions during phacoemulsification surgery with clear corneal incision technique. Thirty-four eyes with cataract of 34 patients, who were operated by phacoemulsification method were included in the study. Incision points were hydrated by balanced saline solution and leakage was controlled at the end of the surgery. Trypan test revealed minor leakage in 23 out of 34 eyes (67.6%). ...

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: May 17, 2016

As life expectancy prolonged currently, geriatrics become important and therefore it is urgent to improve the life quality throughout the chronic and critical diseases among the elderly above sixty-fifth years old. On the other hand, diabetes mellitus (DM) is the most famous chronic and metabolic disease which may lead to many cardiac, renal and infectious complications. Therefore regular blood sugar control is extremely important in diabetic management to avoid further complications. However, t...

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: May 12, 2016

A 3-4 week of intensive insulin intervention corrects hyperglycemia, improves insulin secretion, glycemic control, and insulin sensitivity in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. We assessed the effect of a shorter course of intensive insulin therapy on insulin sensitivity in people with T2DM. Fifteen poorly controlled subjects with severe hyperglycemia were hospitalized and treated with intensive insulin therapy for 7 days. The short insulin tolerance test was performed before and after the in...

New Insights into Functional Implication of Genetic Variation in Association with Cancer

Yanfeng Zhang

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: April 16, 2016

Investigations of the genetic basis of cancers have identified hundreds of robust risk loci associated with cancers using large-scale, case-control, candidate gene studies as well as genome-wide association studies (GWASs) during the past ten years. Most leading single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with cancer sensitivity lie in non-protein-coding regions, suggesting the potentially regulatory functions as targets for susceptible variants. That is a critical question to understand t...

Prdx Overexpression in Tumor Tissue of Breast Cancer Patients

Jillian Muhlbauer and Shelley A Phelan

Article Type: Original Research | First Published: April 08, 2016

Peroxiredoxin (Prdx) proteins are evolutionarily conserved thiol-specific antioxidant enzymes that reduce various cellular peroxides, protecting cells from oxidative damage. Prdxs also have been demonstrated to play an important role in regulating redox-sensitive cell signaling in a number of cell processes. Prdxs have been implicated in cancer biology, and are upregulated in many cancers including breast cancer, as well as several breast cancer cell lines. To explore the entire Prdx family in b...

Feasibility and Timing of Craniosynostosis Surgery in a Child with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: April 11, 2016

Nowadays, children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) survive longer. Thus, the management of such patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery is of increasing relevance. A 12-month-old boy with HLHS following stage II Norwood palliation and Apert syndrome required extended craniosynostosis surgery because of elevated intracerebral pressure. Since extensive blood loss as well as hemodynamic instability were expected, anesthetic and surgical management were carefully planned in a multidiscip...

For successful practical implementation of clinical decision rules, measuring their acceptability is essential. The Ottawa Acceptability of Decision Rules Instrument (OADRI) was developed to serve this need. The OADRI was translated into Dutch according to international guidelines. Decision rule acceptability was measured during three different moments of two impact trials. We described OADRI mean item scores and diversity of answer possibilities, where > 50% "No opinion/Don't know" where define...

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: May 20, 2016

A 93-year-old man with chronic hydrocele and no history of asbestos exposure underwent a hydrocelectomy, which revealed several nodules in the tunica vaginalis. The histopathological diagnosis was malignant mesothelioma, requiring a second procedure. A radical inguinal orchiectomy with hemiscrotectomy was performed, reporting tumor-free surgical margins; therefore, no adjuvant treatments were given. Three months postoperative, the patient continued asymptomatic, scrotal examination was normal, a...
