Severe flank pain is a frequent complaint at the emergency department (ED). It is usually associated to other clinical symptoms like fever, dysuria, vomiting, diarrhea or radiation to the groin. Hereby, it may raise a lot of probable differential diagnosis that should be ruled out first depending on laboratory tests and imaging results. However, when flank pain is isolated and radiating to the groin without evidence of urolithiasis on abdominal CT scan, more rare diagnosis should be suggested su...

Solid organ transplant recipients, and in particular Kidney Transplant (KTx) patients, are at increased risk for developing thyroid cancers due to immunosuppression and improved long-term survival post-transplant. Using the HCUP NIS database, we compared mortality rate, disposition, LOS, and total hospital charge between KTx and Non-KTx patients following thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer during 2008-2014....

Prolactin is a hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary lactotrophs and is controlled by the influence of hypothalamic dopamine. PRL stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of mammary cells for lactation. There are many causes for hyperprolactinemia, including analytical, physiological, pharmacological, pathological and idiopathic causes. Macroprolactin is a significant analytical cause of hyperprolactinemia, and the most common cause of pathological hyperprolactinemia is prolactin se...

Studies of the phenomenon of psychosocial resilience in the lives of a subset of high-risk individuals have suggested that certain psychosocial protective (resiliency) factors moderate the impact of biopsychosocial risk factors as they contribute to the development of mental illness. Resilience can be defined by factors which are present in high-risk individuals who have escaped illness, but not necessarily present in low-risk individuals who have never been ill. Some studies have provided evide...

A 31-year-old woman who carried a laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding for morbid obesity presented chronic postprandial vomiting and lack of efficacy with weight recovery three years after surgery. The adjustable gastric band was removed but symptoms did not improve. Morphologic and functional tests demonstrated a functional obstruction 5 to 6 cm below the oeso-gastric junction, probably related to a fibrous scare, which could explain symptoms. Laparoscopic procedure confirmed the diagnosis,...

Primary thyroid gland lymphoma is a rare condition, accounting for only 2% of extranodal lymphomas, usually occurring in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis. Among these lymphomas, B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma is the most frequently encountered, while Hodgkin’s disease and T-cell lymphomas are extremely rare. Through this paper, we report 5 primary thyroid lymphoma cases, diagnosed in our department in a period of 6 years (Jan 2012 to Dec 2017), all of them were B-cell Non-Hodgkin Lymphomas. P...
