Article Type: Research Article | First Published: February 16, 2019
The expression levels of piR-36707 and piR-36741 were found higher in tumor samples than control ones. Also, piR-36707 expression showed significantly different pattern in terms of gender. Moreover, piR-36707 and piR-36741 expressions displayed statistically significant difference with respect to some TNM staging comparisons. piR-36707 and piR-36741 expressions were significantly differed between Fuhrman nuclear grade 2 and 4. Furthermore, piR-36741 expression change was significantly associated...

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: February 14, 2019
This article reports a left cerebellopontine angle glioblastoma presenting with two week history of rapidly progressive hearing loss and trigeminal pain, treated by subtotal resection and radiotherapy with concomitant and adjuvant temozolomide. At one year, local tumor control and diffuse neoplastic seeding in the cervical spinal cord were evidenced. Glioblastomas involving the cerebellopontine angle are exceptional with only 10 reported cases. The possibility of a glioblastoma should be conside...

What Statistics do Emergency Physicians Need to Know
Edward A Ramoska, MD, MPH*, Virat Patel, MD, Alin Gragossian, DO and Romy Nocera, PhD
Article Type: Original Article | First Published: February 14, 2019
We evaluated 545 articles. Almost 60% of them were cohort studies; 17% were randomized controlled trials, 15% were cross-sectional studies and 4% were meta-analyses. The mean number of statistical tests per article was 4.16 (SD = 1.98), with a median of 4 (IQR = 2). The top ten statistical techniques applied (descriptive statistics, confidence intervals, contingency tables, t-tests, epidemiologic statistics, non-parametric tests, regression analysis, power analysis, multiway tables, and non-para...

Complete Right Bundle Branch Block in Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy: Similarities to Brugada Syndrome
Stefan Peters
Article Type: ORIGINAL ARTICLE | First Published: February 14, 2019
Brugada syndrome is characterized by coved-type ST-segment elevation in one or two right precordial leads. Two types of coved-type ST elevation has been described: A form of complete right bundle branch block (about 60%), in which right precordial leads demonstrate complete block and left precordial leads reveal nearly normal QRS configuration. In about 40% complete right bundle branch block with nearly identically increased QRS intervals....

Most troponin TnT-HS samples (77.1%) were obtained from emergency room (ER) attendance and 63.4% of patients were male. The mean age was 72 years and no correlation was found between age and troponin levels (the statistical number r value needs to be put here). Although expectedly patients with diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome displayed TnT-HS values significantly higher than those of other groups, positivity to TnT-HS (> 40 ng/l) was also observed in patients with other clinical conditions....

Shoulder Infrared Thermography in Chronic Rotator Cuff Tears - Temperature Assessment and Variation in Affected and Non-Affected Shoulders

Article Type: RESEARCH ARTICLE | First Published: February 13, 2019
The obtained results demonstrated IRT as highly reproducible. A small decrease in skin temperature after exercise has been related to peripheral vasoconstriction, and this was confirmed in both affected and non-affected shoulders. Nevertheless, it was expected on affected shoulders a lower baseline and after exercise skin temperatures, which was not confirmed, as no significant difference was found between groups. As such, the role of IRT as complimentary mean of diagnosis is yet to be establish...

Article Type: REVIEW ARTICLE | First Published: January 21, 2019
Breast cancer, a highly penetrant hereditary disorder, is the most common cancer in women worldwide. Approximately 10% of breast cancer cases are hereditary and 15% of patients with invasive breast cancer have a first-degree relative with the same disorder. Genetic counseling has become an important tool of the health care system providing information and support to families at risk of a genetic disorder. Oncology research teams have designed breast cancer screening guidelines for high-risk pati...

Evaluation of Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Patients after Bariatric Surgery of the Fobi Capella Type
Renata Pereira Simplicio Lopes and Alexandre Coelho Serquiz
Article Type: Research Article | First Published: January 18, 2019
Obesity is considered an increasing problem in the worldwide population, reaching epidemic proportions of about 400 million obese people in the world. The accumulation of adipose tissue leads to chronic oxidative stress, since its excess is associated with the development of inflammation, increasing the probability of developing comorbidities due to weight gain. This research aimed to evaluate the changes in inflammatory and antioxidants biomarkers after bariatric surgery in patients with morbid...

Article Type: Commentary | First Published: January 18, 2019
When consumers are looking for probiotics, what are they looking for? Probiotics are defined as "live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host". This definition was the end product of an Expert Consultation of a group of international scientists, invited in 2001 by and on behalf of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to debate the (then) emerging field of probiotics. Twelve...
