Difficulties in Defining a Clinical Score for Acute Flare-Ups in an Osteoarthritic Knee

Hassan M Bassiouni and Ahmed A Negm

Article Type: Editorial | First Published: February 19, 2015

The basic idea of this editorial was to try to propose new techniques and laboratory measurements for future incorporation into a new score for identifying an acutely inflamed osteoarthritic knee joint. In the area of research, defining clinical status was always a hurdle to proper patient recruitment because working on quiet cases of OA with minimal to moderate pain is totally different from working on acute cases of OA with a lot of pain. Hence the problem of defining the clinical status at ti...

Fournier's Gangrene and Prognostic Scoring Systems

Bulent Erol

Article Type: Editorial | First Published: February 17, 2015

A Fournier's gangrene (FG), a life-threatening necrotizing fasciitis of the male and female genitourinary tract was first described in the 1883. FG is an uncommon necrotizing fasciitis of genitalia and perineum that has high mortality and morbidity. Many predisposing factors have been reported, including perianal disease, urethral stricture, local trauma, diabetes mellitus, and malignancy. Systemic diseases such as cardiac failure, hypertension, and renal insufficiency may have an adverse effect...

Multidetector Row Computed Tomography Evaluation in Pediatric Heart Diseases-Additional Information to Echocardiography and Conventional Cardiac Catherterization

Yasunobu Hayabuchi, Miho Sakata and Shoji Kagami

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: February 20, 2015

Multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) scanners are a widely available, accurate, and noninvasive technique for the diagnosis of pediatric cardiovascular disorders. A lots of articles published regarding the usefulness of MDCT mostly describe that it can be an alternative to the invasive catheterization and angiography. The unique diagnostic features of this imaging modality have been largely ignored or disregarded. We presented the pathological conditions that cannot be diagnosed by conve...

Nutritional Medicine and Diet Care

Ross Stewart Grant

Article Type: Editorial | First Published: February 16, 2015

A number of previously well-established fundamentals to nutritional health have been challenged in recent times. The merits of the well balanced low fat diet, built on whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and grains with restricted use of meats and dairy is now being vigorously debated by those advocating various alternatives including; the no grain Paleolithic diet or the high meat protein Atkins diet, or the high fat (low omega-3) Weston Price diet....

Urrutia A, Cepeda JM, Formiga F, Manzano L, Conde-Martel A, Aramburu-Bodas O, Suarez I, Gonzalez-Franco A, Quiros-Lopez R and Montero Perez-Barquero M

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: February 12, 2015

Background: Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is a common condition in the elderly and often occurs together with Heart Failure (HF). The differences between elderly patients with HF according to the presence or absence of AF were analysed. Material and methods: Patient data were collected from consecutively admitted patients 75 years of age and older with acute decompensated HF from the Spanish National Heart Failure Registry (RICA) with data retrieved from internal medicine settings....

Effect of Interferon Alfa-2a on Peripheral Blood CD4+CD25+ T Regulatory Cells in Patients with Behcet Uveitis: Preliminary Study

Aylin Koc, Sumru Onal, Aysin Tulunay, Haluk Kazokoglu, Emel Eksioglu Demiralp, Haner Direskeneli and Sule Yavuz

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: February 13, 2015

Purpose: To evaluate the phonotypical and functional effect of interferon alfa-2a therapy on peripheral blood CD4+CD25+ T regulatory (Treg) cells in patients with Behcet uveitis. Methods: Blood was taken from 5 patients with refractory Behcetpanuveitis and 5 age-matched healthy controls. Flow cytometric analysis of CD4+CD25+Treg cells was performed. CD4+CD25+Treg cells were separated by magnetic-assisted cell sorting and co-cultured. Cytokine levels in the supernatants were determined by ELISA.....

Generation of Retinal Progenitor Cell Sheets which Differentiate into Rhodopsin Positive Photoreceptors from Mouse iPS Cell Derived Retinal Progenitor Cell Clones

Noboru Suzuki, Jun Shimizu, Chieko Hirotsu, Erika Takada, Nagisa Arimitsu, Yuji Ueda, Naruyoshi Fujiwara, Tomoko Suzuki and Kenji Takai

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: February 05, 2015

We previously reported successful establishment of retinal progenitor cell clones. Here, we cultured them on temperature reversible gelation polymer, with supplementation of several chemokines. The retinal progenitor cell clones formed a cell sheet with extension of their axon like processes. RT-PCR of the cell sheets after two week culture, they were positive for retinal ganglion cell markers, bipolar cell markers, and photoreceptor cell markers. Immunohistochemistry suggested that the cell she...

Gene-Specific Promoter Methylation Status in Hormone-Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer Associates with Postmenopausal Body Size and Recreational Physical Activity

Lauren E. McCullough, Jia Chen, Alexandra J. White, Xinran Xu, Yoon Hee Cho, Patrick T. Bradshaw, Sybil M. Eng, Susan L. Teitelbaum, Mary Beth Terry, Gail Garbowski, Alfred I. Neugut, Hanina Hibshoosh, Regina M. Santella, Marilie D. Gammon

Article Type: Original Article | First Published: February 09, 2015

Introduction: Breast cancer, the leading cancer diagnosis among American women, is positively associated with postmenopausal obesity and little or no recreational physical activity (RPA). However, the underlying mechanisms of these associations remain unresolved. Aberrant changes in DNA methylation may represent an early event in carcinogenesis, but few studies have investigated associations between obesity/RPA and gene methylation, particularly in postmenopausal breast tumors where these lifest...

Narcissism: It's more Complex than High Self-Esteem

Marion Wallace

Article Type: Editorial | First Published: January 30, 2015

Narcissism is often used synonymously with high or inflated selfe-steem. Indeed, narcissism is illustrated by individuals with grandiose self-views and a need for admiration. The origins of the term stem from Greek mythology where a young man named Narcissus became enamored with his reflection. However, individuals with higher levels of narcissistic traits make up a unique combination of high and vulnerable self-esteem. Since narcissism is more complex than high self-esteem, individuals with hig...
