Yueh-Chen Yeh

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: June 27, 2016

Because of the growing expectations for novice nurses to be adequately prepared to work in complex healthcare settings, pressure has dramatically increased for nursing schools to deliver better training. Nurse educators must explore innovative teaching methods to link the gap between knowledge and practice in order to enhance the students' ability to function as competent nurses. Researchers stated that simulation has the potential to help nurse educators better train students, especially when f...

Why is Respiratory Rate the Neglected Vital Sign? A Narrative Review

Malcolm Elliott

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: June 26, 2016

Respiratory rate assessment is essential for detecting acute changes in a patient's condition. Despite this, research has shown that it is the most neglected vital sign in clinical practice. This literature review identified three key reasons for this: inadequate knowledge regarding respiratory rate assessment; nurses' perception of patient acuity; and lack of time. These factors suggest poor understanding of the importance of respiratory rate as a vital sign....

Trends in Recurrence of Keratocystic Odontogenic Tumor

Ianculovici C, Blinder D and O Peleg

Article Type: Case Series | First Published: July 12, 2016

The recurrence rate of 112 cases of Keratocystic Odontogenic Tumor (KCOT) were analyzed with regard to their location, size, locularity and treatment. 36 patients (32.1%) presented recurrence. Multilocular KCOT measuring more than 3.5 cm presented higher rate of recurrence. When the initial treatment was enucleation with peripheral ostectomy the recurrence was located in the periphery of the initial tumor. When the treatment was marsupialization followed by enucleation and peripheral ostectomy, ...

A Review of Characteristics and Treatments of the Avoidant Personality Disorder. Could the DBT be an Option?

Antonio Drago, Cristina Marogna and Hans Jorgen Sogaard

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: June 24, 2016

Avoidant personality disorder (APD) is a frequent disorder whose prevalence has been reported to be as high as 10% in mental clinic outpatients. There is an open debate on whether APD is to be considered a different disorder compared to social phobia (SP), or they are different quantitative manifestations of the same pathologic process. Treatment for APD is mainly based on evidence gathered for SP or SP in co-morbidity with APD. Suggested pharmacological treatment of APD is SSRIs or SNRIs....

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: July 11, 2016

A 63-year-old man known to have human immune-deficiency viral (HIV) infection was referred for evaluation following three episodes of left upper lobe pneumonia. He was well controlled on his anti-retroviral medications. Physical exam showed left upper lobe wheezing. No evidence of obstruction could be seen on chest X-ray or computed tomography (CT). Bronchoscopy was done and showed an obstructing lesion that was biopsied then ablated. It was found to be due to a spontaneous formation of granulat...

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Modulation of TH17 Cells

Justin D Glenn and Katharine A Whartenby

Article Type: Short Review | First Published: June 26, 2016

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multi-faceted cells capable of tissue regeneration, wound healing, and immunosuppression. Their immunosuppressive actions extend to most innate and adaptive immune cells, including TH17 cells, which have recently been discovered to be important pathogenic cells in a variety of disease settings, including many autoimmune diseases. As various long-standing treatments and therapies in autoimmune disease may face limitations and result in dangerous side effects, the...

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: June 30, 2016

Individualization of busulfan (BU) dosing during pre-transplant conditioning for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has been performed worldwide for more than a decade. The pharmacokinetic parameters of BU show high variability and studies report that high plasma concentrations (> 900 ng/mL) are associated with sinusoidal obstructive syndrome (SOS), whereas low plasma concentrations (< 600 ng/mL) are associated with graft rejection and/or disease recurrence....
