Adult Brain Neurogenesis, Neural Stem Cells and Neurogenic Niches

Lina Maria Delgado-Garcia and Rogerio Martins Amorim

Article Type: Mini Review | First Published: July 28, 2016

During the late 60's, the experiments with brain lesions in rats, suggested the possibility of neurogenesis in the adult brain. Three decades later, the conceptual link between adult neurogenesis and stem cells was proposed. We now know that the adult mammalian brain may have the ability to regenerate through adult neural stem cells (NSCs). Here are briefly reviewed classical and current theories in adult neurogenesis, NSCs and neurogenic niches....

Peripheral anterior chamber angle images of 27 eyes were taken by slit lamp biomicroscope and analyzed by automated software. The software selected region of interest and applied a light reflection extraction to detect corneal thickness (CT) and peripheral anterior chamber depth (PACD). Three observers manually counted CT (CTm) and PACD (PACDm) pixels and compared with the CT and PACD pixel counts that were obtained by the software (CTa and PACDa)....

Estimating Relapse Free Survival as a Net Probability: Regression Models and Graphical Representation. An Application of a Large Breast Cancer Case Series

Annalisa Orenti, Elia Biganzoli and Patrizia Boracchi

Article Type: Original Article | First Published: August 12, 2016

In most clinical studies, the evaluation of the effect of a therapy and the impact of prognostic factors is based on relapse-free survival. Relapse free is a net survival, since it is interpreted as the relapse-free probability that would be observed if all patients experienced relapse sooner or later. Death without evidence of relapse prevents the subsequent observation of relapse, acting in a semi-competing risks framework. Relapse free survival is often estimated by standard regression models...

Breast MRI Screening for the Clinician: Evolution to Current Evidence-Based Practice

R Jared Weinfurtner and Jennifer Drukteinis

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: August 15, 2016

The utility of MRI in the detection of breast cancer has evolved over the last few decades. It is now the most sensitive imaging tool available for the diagnosis of invasive breast cancer. There are drawbacks however, namely increased cost in comparison to screening mammography and decreased specificity. Thus, it is important to tailor the use of breast MRI to specific screening populations in order to maximize the benefit to drawback ratio. In this review, the current evidence for screening MRI...
