Stevens - Johnson Syndrome and Intestinal Perforation following regorafenib Administration for Metastatic Rectal Cancer: A Case Report

Tetsuhito Muranaka, Yoshito Komatsu, Kentaro Sawada, Hiroshi Nakatsumi, Yasuyuki Kawamoto, Satoshi Yuki, Riichiro Abe, Kanako C Hatanaka and Naoya Sakamoto

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: February 09, 2016

Regorafenib monotherapy is useful for the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC), which is refractory to multiple anti-cancer agents. However, it is associated with a high incidence of adverse events such as hand-foot skin reactions, elevated liver enzymes, etc. Although there are few reports of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) or intestinal perforation associated with regorafenib, such events should be taken into consideration, as with various other anti-cancer therapies, including bevacizumab....

Gel Bleed and Rupture of Silicone Breast Implants Investigated by Light-, Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis of Internal Organs and Nervous Tissue

R.M. Kappel, L.L. Boer and H. Dijkman

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: January 29, 2016

Some women, who have received silicone breast implants either for breast augmentation or breast reconstruction, develop health problems in different gradations over the years and a thorough explanation for this has yet to be given this is because this kind of research can only be performed on living humans. In addition, as the existence of associated complaints is still largely denied and neglected by the various medical disciplines, they are not recorded in medical histories of the involved wom...

Increased Corrected QT Interval (QTc) in First Nations Women of Northern British Columbia with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

Fritha A Munday, Sirisha Asuri, Sarah McIntosh, Heather Jackson, Anthony Tang and Laura Arbour

Article Type: Original Article | First Published: January 30, 2016

Long QT Syndrome (LQTS), a genetic predisposition to sudden cardiac death is defined by a prolonged corrected QT interval (QTc) measured on electrocardiogram (ECG). A participatory research project has been underway with the Gitxsan of Northern BC for more than ten years where the condition (LQTS1) is common, due to a founder mutation (V205M) in KCNQ1. It is effectively treated with beta blockers and avoidance of QT prolonging drugs. Some chronic conditions are also known to increase the QTc, wh...

Ventricular fibrillation was induced via a pacing wire forwarded into the right ventricle in 20 female Landrace/Large-White pigs, allocated into 2 groups; the experimental group treated with a bolus dose of 5,000 U/Kg recombinant human erythropoietin and the control group which was administered saline. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed immediately after drug administration....

Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection: Report of 6 Cases and Literature Review

Adolfo Ferrero Guadagnoli, Miguel A Ballarino, Carlos R Leonardi, Alejandro E Contreras, Eduardo J Brenna and Jonathan Miara

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: January 27, 2016

We present our recent casuistry on such an interesting issue as coronary dissections. Provide data to assist the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. Spontaneous coronary artery dissection is a non-traumatic and non-iatrogenic separation of the coronary artery walls. It is a rare cause of acute coronary syndrome, mainly affecting women with no significant cardiovascular risk factors and has varying presentations from mild chest pains to sudden cardiac death....

Left Ventricular Assist Device Placement through Left Thoracotomy in Difficult Scenarios

Lyndsay M. Mueller, Samuel H. Cho, Timothy Fritz and Asghar Khaghani

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: January 18, 2016

Standard surgical approach to the implantation of a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) is through a median sternotomy. The inflow cannula is attached to the apex of the left ventricle, while the outflow graft is usually attached to the ascending aorta. We present 2 patients with prohibitive chest wall abnormalities who underwent left thoracotomy for LVAD placement, and the outflow graft alternatively attached to the descending aorta....

A 56-year old woman with history of laparoscopic cholecystectomy was referred to outpatient clinic 3 years after the operation with a non-healing reddish lump in the surgical scar. The lesion was situated at the site of the right subcostal port, in the medioclavicular line, below the ribcage. Local excision was performed and histological evaluation revealed poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma, which was thought to be metastatic. Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is a highly invasive surgery. Therefore, assessment of pre-operative nutritional status may contribute to the postoperative course. Patients (n = 116) who had undergone PD were included in this study. We evaluated the usefulness of the body mass index (BMI), prognostic nutrition index (PNI), and controlling nutritional status score (CONUT) for evaluating post-operative complication risk by examining the relationship between pre-operative nutritional status and the oc...

Microwave/Radiofrequency (MW/RF) Radiation Exposure and Cancer Risk: Meta-Analysis of Accumulated Empirical Evidence

Iris Atzmon, Shai Linn, Elihu D Richter and Boris Portnov

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: January 30, 2016

Scientific debate regarding the health effects of Microwave/Radiofrequency (MW/RF) radiation has continued for decades, but has risen sharply in recent years due to an explosion in wireless technology. Several studies of the health effects of MW/RF radiation were published in recent years, but their results have not been analyzed to date using meta-analysis tools....

Microwave/Radiofrequency (MW/RF) Radiation Exposure and Cancer Risk: A Meta-analysis of Time-related Trends in the Accumulated Empirical Evidence

Iris Atzmon, Boris Portnov, Shai Linn and Elihu D Richter

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: January 27, 2016

Scientific debate regarding health effects from MW/RF radiation has increased considerably in recent years. In the early 1980's much of the evidence concerning the health effects of MW/RF radiation came from occupational studies, however, in the 1990's and the 2000's, environmental studies became more dominant. This resulted from an increase in public awareness about exposure to MW/RF radiation....
