The availability of a representative Gene Ontology (GO) database is a prerequisite for a successful functional genomics study. Using the online Blast2GO tool we constructed a GO database of Aspergillus flvus, a plant and human pathogen. Of the predicted total 13,485 A. flvus genes 8,987 were annotated with GO terms. The mean GO level was 5.64. Using a low stringency setting of a sequence cut-off number of 10 and a node score of 20, we obtained 1,177 GO terms associated with biological process, 388 GO terms associated with molecular function and 200 GO terms associated with cellular component. ...

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: October 30, 2014
Insulin receptor (IR) signaling plays a key role in the regulation of glucose homeostasis. A dysfunctional and/or unregulated IR activation has been shown to cause a range of clinical manifestations including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, obesity, cancer, hypertension, and cardiovascular disorders. The molecular mechanisms mediating IR activation have become an important area of scientifi and clinical research. Here, we summarize the current understanding of IR structure, function, and signaling, and highlight the role of glycosylation and sialylation in IR activation. The key interacti...

Objective: To assess the effect of olive oil, non fried fih and nuts on endothelial function in overweight/obese patients.
Methods: 47 overweight/obese patients (24 men, mean age 54 +/- 11 years) fed healthy diet (HD) defied according to the NuretaPREDIMED study for 3 months; after this 3 months of HD, the patients were blindly divided into 4 groups: Controls (24: HD), Group A (8: HD+olive oil), Group B (8: HD+not-fried fih), Group C (7: HD+nuts). These four groups were also followed-up for further 15 months. All patients were evaluated at baseline, at 3 and 18 months for glucose and lipid pr...

Background: Trastuzumab has been approved for patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) over expression and gene amplifiation metastatic gastric cancer. Here we present the prevalence of HER2 positive gastric cancer in an Irish population, the use of Trastuzumab in fist line and beyond progression.
Methods: The study was conducted in St James’s Hospital, Dublin. A retrospective analysis of the date of patients with HER2 positive gastric cancer over a period of 3 years was carried out. Her2 positive was defied as immunohistochemistry (IHC) score of +3, of IHC score of +2 a...
Epidemiology and Radiotherapy of Hepatocellular Carcinoma
Article Type: Short Communication | First Published: October 27, 2014
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary liver cancer secondary to chronic liver conditions such as hepatitis Bvirus (HBV) and C virus (HCV) infections, obesity and alcoholism. HCC is the sixth most common solid tumor, and third most lethal cancer globally. Thre may be a gender diffrence in the development and outcome of chronic liver diseases. In U.S., the incidence of HBV infection has declined since the introduction of HBV vaccination in 1981. But approximately 350 million of global population has chronic HBV infection. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is another major source of chronic...

The study investigated the influence of knowledge, attitude and screening behaviour of Benue State University Male Students towards prostate cancer awareness. Five research questions and research hypotheses guided the study. The study was a cross-sectional design utilizing a pretested 34-item Prostate Cancer Questionnaire (PCQ) (Cronbach’s alpha of 0.62) to collect information about knowledge, attitude and screening behaviour regarding prostate cancer among Benue State University Male students Makurdi, Nigeria. Two hundred and forty-fie participants were sampled for the study by systematic ran...

Objective: To demonstrate AD plaques in retina.
Methods: We examined 30 patients with Mild Cognitive İmpairment (MCI). In the patients in whom we found hyper or hypo florescent lesions on Fundus Auto Fluorescence (FAF), Optical Scanning Tomography (OCT) was performed through these regions to reveal depositions in the retina. Drusen like spots- dots were noticed in different parts of the retina. 20 randomly chosen patients and 20 age-matched healthy controls were given curcumin to check for the changes in FAF and OCT.
Results: In 26 patiens, we were able to fid abnormal deposits in dif...

Article Type: Original Article | First Published: November 01, 2014
Background: Anesthesia is stressful for children and parents. Although anxiolytics can keep children calm, side effects may exist. No single method shows a clear advantage in keeping the child calm and cooperative. This study aimed to test the effiacy and safety of adding a small dose ketamine to midazolam-based oral premedication on child-parents separation and acceptance of face mask.
Methods: Eighty preschool children scheduled for elective surgeries were included. Patients were allocated into 2 groups: A control group (group C), patients received oral midazolam 0.5mg/kg, and a study grou...

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: October 27, 2014
Introduction: Trauma is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in Singapore. In our peripheral hospital we have a large trauma load despite being a non level one trauma center. Whilst we have many studies done in the West documenting the quality of life of trauma victims using scoring systems such as the EQ5DTM and GOSE, there is a paucity of literature from this part of the World.
Methods: We analyzed the results of 6 months of data collected by our trauma coordinator looking specifially at the EQ5DTM and GOSE scores after 6 months of rehabilitation amongst survivors. Phone interviews w...
