Intrathecal Dexmedetomidine or Meperidine for Post-spinal Shivering

Mohamed Hamdy Ellakany

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: September 11, 2014

Background: Shivering occurs frequently during the perioperative period. A prospective, randomized, double-blind study was done to compare between intrathecal dexmedetomidine (5mcg) and intrathecal meperidine (0.2mg/kg) for decreasing the incidence and intensity of shivering after spinal anesthesia for lower abdominal operations. Methods: Seventy five patients scheduled for lower abdominal operations under spinal anesthesia were randomly allocated to three groups. Spinal anesthesia consisted of 12.5 mg hyperbaric bupivacaine 0.5% in addition to dexmedetomidine (5mcg) (group D) or meperidine ...

Validity of Creatine Kinase as an Indicator of Muscle Injury in Spine Surgery and its Relation with Postoperative Pain

Domingo Lombao Iglesias, Joan Bago Granell, Teresa Vilor Ribero

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: September 10, 2014

Injury to the paraspinal muscle during posterior spinal surgery has been related to the intensity of postoperative pain. The aim of the study was to confirm the validity of serum postoperative creatine kinase (CK) values as an indicator of muscle lesion as well as to assess the relationship of CK with variables indicating surgical invasiveness and investigate the association between CK values and excessive postoperative pain. Material and Method: The study included 96 patients (mean age 62.8 years) who underwent instrumented spine fusion for degenerative lumbosacral disorders. Serum CK conce...

The Impact Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose (SMBG) on Metabolic Control in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes. A Developing Country Perspective

Kameel Mungrue and Verna Farrell-Williams

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: October 02, 2014

Introduction: The role of Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose (SMBG) in patients with type 2 diabetes remains inconclusive. As part of the approach to improve glycaemic control in patients with T2DM in Trinidad a high prevalence setting for T2DM, the Ministry of Heath distributes free glucometers and strips. The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of SMBG on glycaemic control and to determine patients' behaviors and responses. Methods: A large outpatient clinic for patients with T2DM was selected for the study. All clients who met the entry were eligible for entry into the study using a ...

Anaesthetic Management in a Patient with Glomus Jugulare Tumour for Ankle Surgery

Monu Yadav, R Gopinath, B Rajesh Kumar, Shibani Padhy, A Anand Ram and Suresh Kumar Chintha

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: September 11, 2014

Anaesthesia has special considerations in any case of intracranial space occupying lesions. Not much of literature is available about anaesthetic considerations in a patient with Glomus jugulare tumour requiring surgery for non neurosurgical procedure. Glomus jugulare tumours arise from the glomus body within the adventitia of the jugular bulb. Glomus bodies are histologically similar to carotid bodies. They are composed of epitheloid cells embedded in capillary net work. Occasionally these tumours are capable of secreting catecholamines. We present a known case of Glomus jugulare tumour with ...

A Novel Approach to Investigate Functional Exonic SNPs Associated with Lung Diseases at Post-Transcriptional Stage

Tong Zhou and Ting Wang

Article Type: Editorial | First Published: August 18, 2014

Genome wide association studies (GWAS) have resulted in the identification of novel genetic loci associated with a variety of diseases and clinical phenotypes, including complex lung disease such as asthma and COPD. However, the translational utilization of these expensive datasets has been restricted by multiple reasons including limited methodology to understand the exact molecular function of these single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)....

The incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PRC) it is recently considered to be up to 5%. In the high-risk group, the incidence may reach or even exceed 20%. The mortality associated with PRC can be ranged 10-25%. Fleischman et al found that the incidence of PRC was higher than perioperative cardiac events, considered to be a common postoperative problem. Other authors reported that PRC is associated with a high morbidity profile....

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem inflammatory disease of unknown etiology that is characterized by noncaseating granuloma. Its incidence is 11 cases per 100,000 population in whites and 34 cases per 100,000 population in African Americans. Sarcoidosis most often involves the lung and intrathoracic lymph nodes but can occur in any other organ system. The most common respiratory complaints are dyspnea, shortness of breath and wheezing. Joanna Suliburska

Article Type: Editorial | First Published: July 31, 2014

Some medicines may interact with mineral, with the result that changes occur in the concentration of minerals and other blood parameters that are associated with mineral status. Interpretation of the results of morphological and biochemical blood analyses therefore needs to take into account the drugs used by patients....
