No Significant Difference in Outcomes for Surgical Treatment of Thyroid Cancer in Kidney Transplant Recipients - Analysis of the HCUP NIS Data

Darren B Abbas, MD, Eric Goldschmidt, MD, Christina Camick, MD, Weikai Qu, MD, PhD and Jorge Ortiz, MD

Article Type: Original article | First Published: December 13, 2019

Solid organ transplant recipients, and in particular Kidney Transplant (KTx) patients, are at increased risk for developing thyroid cancers due to immunosuppression and improved long-term survival post-transplant. Using the HCUP NIS database, we compared mortality rate, disposition, LOS, and total hospital charge between KTx and Non-KTx patients following thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer during 2008-2014. Propensity score matching was performed using demographics, payer, income, hospital characteristics, elective admission, and in-hospital mortality index score. There were no significant diffe...

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: December 16, 2019

We describe the case of a 61-year-old female who was admitted to our tertiary centre with 15-day of dyspnea and whitish expectoration. The patient had a history of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism a year ago, anticoagulated until a few months ago with acenocumarol. The patient was diagnosed with pulmonary thromboembolism by CT-scan and deep vein thrombosis in the proximal segment of the left femoral vein....

Giant Epidermoid Cyst of the Bony External Ear Canal - A Rare Case Report

Muzeyyen Dogan

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: December 05, 2019

Epidermal cyst of the bony external auditory canal in adults is rare. Only nine cases are reported in the literature. They occasionally tend to develop into a malignancy. A 35-years-old female presented with complaints of decreased hearing and fullness at the left ear. The severity of these symptoms increased gradually for 6 months. On physical examination, the left otoscopy showed a mass that was completely occluding the canal; the tympanic membrane was not visualized. The property of this mass was round, smooth, soft and covered with normal skin. The left tympanic membrane was not evaluated ...

Fundal Placenta Percreta Presenting as Acute Abdomen: A Case Report and the Role of CT-scan in Management

Mohamad K Ramadan, MBBCh-FACS, Bassam Sammak, MD, FRCR, Amani Mohsen, MD, Haneen Hijazi, MD and Dominique A Badr, MD

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: December 06, 2019

Fundal abnormally invasive placentae (AIP) rate is not precisely known, though, it is thought to be infrequent. Acute abdomen due to uterine rupture is an atypical and an extremely rare presentation. Hereby, we report the case of a 33-year-old G3P2002 who presented at 21-weeks with acute abdomen. CT-Scan and color-Doppler ultrasound showed massive hemoperitoneum with a fundal placenta actively bleeding into the abdominal cavity. At laparotomy, the uterus had a 3 cm dent in its left fundal area through which villi were protruding and actively bleeding. Uterine rupture due to non-previa AIP shou...

Electrocardiographic Brugada Pattern Unmasked by Febrile Illness

Antonio Villa, Alfredo Corticelli, Luisa Chiappa and Antonella Savinelli

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: December 04, 2019

Brugada syndrome is associated with a high risk of sudden cardiac death and some authors suggested the possibility that a febrile state may unmask the Brugada syndrome. We present a case of fever-induced type I electrocardiographic Brugada pattern. This is well known among the cardiologists, but it is necessary to introduce this clinical entity to other specialists, especially among internists and physicians of the emergency. Brugada syndrome, first described in 1992 as a new clinical entity by Pedro and Josep Brugada, is an autosomal dominant disease associated with a high risk of sudden card...

Assessment of the Topographic Memory in Epileptic Patients

BAKOU Niangoran Francois, KPI-N'DIH Annabelle, BA Abdoulaye and ADOU Kobenan Fieni

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: December 04, 2019

The method used is that of named Route Learning Task (RLT). It is a path learning task (topographic memory) that is based solely on learning a route composed of visual but non-verbal cues so that there is no influence of Examiner language or signposts on patient behavior. At a normal walking pace, the subjects had to travel a 10-minute loop in the cocody university hospital. The route (approximately 200 m) included 7 crossings that required an orientation decision. The examiner showed the route a first time and asked the subject to repeat the trip three times in a row, if the first two tests w...

Epidemiology as a Tool for Social Communication as a Fulfillment of the Millennium Goals: An Updated Look at the Causes in Parasitosis. Havana 2019

Osvaldo Batista Rojas

Article Type: Review Article | First Published: December 09, 2019

The epidemiology aims to describe and explain the dynamics of population health, identify the elements that compose it and understand the forces that govern it, in addition to promoting health, preventing and controlling diseases through the knowledge of their causes, in order to intervene in the course of their natural development to modify them. The nascent development of capitalism gave new impetus to the development of epidemiology and a renewed nuance to the causal conception of morbid states. The millennium change served as a pretext to discuss the future of this scientific discipline an...

Adult Patients who were Breastfed are Less Anxious but Suffer More Frequently of Non-Diarrheic Functional Bowel Disorders

Michel Bouchoucha, Ghislain Devroede, Pierre Rompteaux, Florence Mary, Bakhtiar Bejou and Robert Benamouzig

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: December 04, 2019

Many patients have persistent and recurring GI symptoms attributed to the digestive system. The Rome criteria, a classification of the functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) has been proposed, for FGIDS not associated to any structural or biochemical abnormalities. These disorders can affect any part of the GI tract (esophagus, stomach, colon, terminal intestine). FGIDs are not psychiatric disorders, although stress and psychological difficulties can make FGIDs worse. There are three primary features of FGIDs, namely motility, sensation and brain-gut dysfunction....

Article Type: RESEARCH ARTICLE | First Published: December 09, 2019

Participants were 120 CWS, aged 3-12 years, who were patients at our hospital. Each child was asked the following three questions: Has anyone asked you why you speak in that way? (questioned); has anyone imitated the way you speak? (imitated); and has anyone laughed at your speech? (laughed). We also asked if the CWS felt unhappy or happy about these responses. The total proportion of children who were questioned, imitated, and laughed at was 66.6%. Most of the CWS in the study over 4-years-old felt unhappy with any of these responses to stuttering. We found that even at age 4, CWS remembered ...
