As one gets older, some changes occur in swallowing mechanisms. The non-symptomatic swallowing disorders associated with aging for no reason are called presbyphagia. Whether or not presbyphagia has any cause other than the mechanisms of aging is not clear. In our study, we investigated the association of presbyphagia with hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Early detection of presbyphagia is important, and it is also important to reveal its association with common diseases encountered in society. Early diagnosis of the elderly presenting with presbyphagia who carry the risk for dysphagia is o...

Acute Cognitive Effects of Physical Activity for People who have Dementia

Jordan Elliott-King, Elizabeth Peel and Eef Hogervorst

Article Type: Original Article | First Published: August 01, 2019

Physical activity has the potential to improve cognition for those with dementia, as demonstrated by randomised controlled trials lasting at least 6 weeks. Research is yet to explore the acute cognitive effects of physical activity for people with dementia. This study therefore aimed to establish if people with dementia experience cognitive benefits from acute resistance physical activity over and above a social control...

Predicting mortality is one of the greatest challenges for critical care physicians. Severity scoring systems integrate clinical data to estimate the probability of death, which can be used to facilitate resource utilization or continuing quality improvement and to stratify patients for clinical research. Prospective validation in different populations of critically ill patients improves the applicability of the model to these settings. Furthermore, the performance of a prognostic score must be evaluated prior to being used in a particular subgroup of patients....
