Article Type: Research Article | First Published: September 05, 2015

Generally, ET is a myeloproliferative disorder characterized by persistent peripheral thrombocytosis and abnormal megakaryocytic proliferation in the bone marrow. ET is a rare cause of thrombocytosis and may be associated with both venous and arterial thrombosis in 10-75% of cases, depending largely on the study and whether vasomotor symptoms are included in thrombotic manifestations....

Exposure to HIV-1 Altered CCR7-Mediated Migration of Monocytes: Regulation by PGE2

Sandra C Cote, Stamatoula Pasvanis and Nancy Dumais

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: October 04, 2015

Transmission and pathogenesis of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus type-1 (HIV-1) are interconnected during all stages of the disease with cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage. Monocytes are constantly exposed or are targets of HIV-1 and their migratory behaviors are implicated in the dissemination of the infection throughout the host. Monocytes arising from quiescent and infected cells of the myeloid precursor lineage in bone marrow have been demonstrated as a source of residual HIV DNA....

Codon Usage as a Possible Source of Sofosbuvir Genetic Resistance Bias in HCV Patients Infected with Different Genotypes

Carlos Campayo, Antonio Mas and Rosario Sabariegos

Article Type: Commentary | First Published: September 28, 2015

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is responsible for liver chronic infections that in a high percentage of cases lead to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. In the past, treatment consisted on a combination of pegylated interferon plus ribavirin. However, since 2012 a new wave in treatment options appears with the new family of drugs targeting viral components, the so-called direct-acting antivirals. Now we have a battery of drugs directed against viral protease (NS3/4A), polymerase (NS5B), and viral NS5A protein....

The Challenge of Measuring Viscoelastic Properties of Human Whole Saliva to Fit Clinical Purpose

Diogo Lofgren C, Johansson D, Bohlin L, Sahlstrom A and Christersson C

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: October 03, 2015

To understand the protective functions of saliva secreted from different glands in the masticatory process, it is of interest to study its viscoelastic properties. Characterization of saliva samples are not that easily performed in a clinical setting, since most of the experimental techniques and instruments available are developed for research purposes. The aim of this study was to characterize how the viscoelastic properties of saliva can be measured and monitored using two laboratory instruments. Unstimulated whole saliva from 11 healthy volunteers was characterized using two instruments, ...

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: September 16, 2015

Among the factors that should be considered for the rehabilitation of atrophic jaws is mainly the anatomy of edentulous jaw, which offers trouble installing fixtures in view of the proximity to the maxillary sinus and nasal cavity. There are several possibilities to rehabilitate atrophic arcs, autogenous grafts, distraction osteogenesis, angled and short implants have been widely used in clinical practice. Thus, advanced surgical techniques are disclosed in the literature, such as the all-on-four standard technique....

Guillain-Barre Syndrome with Lymphocytic Pleocytosis of the CSF

Sneha Padidam, Jacqueline Kraft and M Kamran Athar

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: October 8, 2015

60-year-old man presented with progressive lower-extremity weakness that progressed to involve respiratory failure and are flexia over several weeks. Electromyography showed both demyelinating and axonal features. Lumbar puncture revealed a lymphocytic pleocytosis. Given the abnormalities on these tests with a clinical picture of Guillain-Barre the patient underwent extensive paraneoplastic testing and full neuro-axis imaging. Imaging revealed abnormal enhancement of ventral and dorsal nerve roots which is consistent with Guillain-Barre....

Stephanie BM Tan, Greg Malone and Judith TW Goh

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: September 23, 2015

Ectopic ureters draining into a place other than the posterior-lateral aspect of the trigone is uncommon. Patients may be asymptomatic or present with the classic symptoms of normal voiding associated with continuous urinary leakage. We present a case of an adult female whose ureteric duplication was unmasked after insertion of tension free vaginal tape (TVT)....
