Changes in Auditory Steady - State Response and Tympanometry Post Adenotonsillectomy in Otitis Media with Effusion

Aman, Jagat Singh, Ashiya Goel, Chandni Sharma, Vikasdeep Gupta and Swati

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: April 27, 2019

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is an important and common condition in paediatric age group. It is the leading cause of hearing loss and a social morbidity in children which has long-term consequences for speech and language development. Adenoid hypertrophy is an important etiological factor in the causation of OME. Recurrent attacks of rhinitis, sinusitis and chronic tonsillitis may cause chronic adenoid infection and hyperplasia. Allergy of the upper respiratory tract may also contribute to enlarged adenoids. The main reasons postulated for adenotonsillectomy as a means of treatment and pr...

Ala Wafa, Mustafa Elsagier, Rawad Friwan and Abdulaziz Baio

Article Type: Original Article | First Published: April 27, 2019

The role of laparoscopy in abdominal trauma has increased in the last years in diagnosis as well as therapeutic interventions. It is a viable alternative for the diagnosis of intra-abdominal injury in both penetrating and blunt trauma. The number of negative laparotomies decreased since the use of laparoscopy in trauma patients. A retrospective study of twenty eight patients with abdominal trauma (22 penetrating trauma, 6 blunt trauma) were laparoscopic intervention done by general surgery department at Aljazeera Hospital for Orthopedic and Specialized Surgery from January 2017 to March 2019. ...

Frequency of Diseases Inducing a Systemic Oxidative Stress in 175 Patients with Intracranial Aneurysms

Thierry Patrice, MD, PhD, Romain Bourcier, MD, Hubert Desal, MD, PhD, Bertrand Rozec, MD, PhD and Yvonnick Blanloeil, MD

Article Type: Case Study | First Published: April 26, 2019

Oxidative stress (OS) could be involved during intracranial aneurysms (ICA) progression but knowledge about comorbidities likely to induce OS is poor. We studied the medical and surgical history of patients with an ICA discovered after a subarachnoidal haemorrhage (SAH) or unruptured (UIA). 175 patients, 58 with a UIA, had been successively recruited from a single centre. Their medical history, comorbidities and treatments had been gathered from hospital files, general practitioners, relatives and patients. Frequency of each diseases had been compared between UIA and SAH groups and to the Fren...

A Case Control Study of Risk Factors for Depression in Intensive Care Unit Patients

Sherif Abdelmonem, PhD, Ghada Abdel Hadi, PhD, Akram Fayed, PhD, Iman El Sayed, PhD and Khaled Mogazy, MD

Article Type: Observational Study | First Published: May 04, 2019

A case-control study was conducted on 159 adult patients admitted to the ICU of a governmental hospital, Alexandria, Egypt. We classified the patients using the Arabic version of Hamilton scale as either depressed or not. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were done to detect the relation between depression and different predictors after controlling the confounding effect of all other factors. The prevalence of depression in the ICU patients was 46.5%. The strongest risk factor for depression was female gender (Odds ratio (OR) 46.4, 95% CI: 11.3 to 189.9). One-year increase in age increases t...

Hundred patients (100) presenting a complication after BPH surgery were included in this study in a total of 312 open prostatectomies performed. The post-operative complication rate was 32%. Seventy percent of the patients had at least one complication. Grade I and Grade II complications according to the modified Clavien's classification system were the most represented (87%). Two patients (2) died in the immediate postoperative period (Grade V). The presence of urethral catheter before surgery was identified as a risk factor for complication. A statistically significant difference was found i...
