Correlation Statistic for Assessing a Diagnostic Value Based on a Bivariate Bernoulli Distribution with Application to a Retrospective Single-Center Clinical Study

Xiaoyong Wu, Jayesh P Rai, Guohua Yan, Srivastava DK and Shesh N Rai

Article Type: RESEARCH ARTICLE | First Published: March 04, 2019

Assessing the performance of diagnostic tests for repeated binary measurements is very important in clinical trials and diagnostic medicine. The gastric-emptying studies involve 4-hourly measurements of emptying. Empirical results suggest that the gastric emptying results over time are correlated and therefore failure to consider the correlation in statistical measures may not produce satisfactory assessments. If these measurements are highly correlated/associated, early gastric emptying can be used to predict late gastric emptying which offers an opportunity to reduce the number of repeats. A...

Relationship of Socioeconomic Status Indicators to Obesity in Hispanic and Non-Hispanic White Middle-Aged Women: A Population Study

Shirley AA Beresford, Deborah J Bowen, Alyson J Littman, Denise L Albano, KC Gary Chan, Shelby L Langer, Wendy E Barrington and Donald L Patrick

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: February 28, 2019

Obesity rates differ between Hispanic and White (non-Hispanic) women in the United States, with higher rates among Hispanic women. Socioeconomic processes contribute to this disparity both at the individual and the environmental level. Understanding these complex relationships requires multilevel analyses within cohorts of women that have a shared environment. In population-based samples of Hispanic and White (non-Hispanic) women from the same neighborhoods, we evaluated within each ethnic group a) The association of individual-level socioeconomic status (SES) with body mass index (BMI); and b...

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: February 23, 2019

The burden of diabetes mellitus is increasing in low-income and middle-income countries, and it is a major contributor to premature mortality. The care of patients with diabetes mellitus is multidisciplinary and involves a number of healthcare personnel. Effective communication between diabetic patients and healthcare personnel influence self-management and health outcomes. Development of In Vitro Fertilization, a Very Important Part of Human Reproductive Medicine, in the Last 40 Years

Marte Myhre Reigstad and Ritsa Storeng

Article Type: Mini Review | First Published: February 22, 2019

It is estimated that, worldwide, over 8 million babies are born following infertility treatment with in vitro fertilization (IVF) since the birth of world's first IVF baby 40 years ago. Recent estimates suggest that by year 2100, 400 million individuals or 3% of the world population may be alive as a result of IVF and other fertility treatments. The developments within infertility treatment using techniques and procedures that evolved from initially animal and lately human research are enormous. Some of the technological advances in reproductive medicine have also contributed to developments a...

Use of Extracorporeal Life Support in Postpartum in a Patient with Amniotic Fluid Embolism Complicated by Left Ventricular Failure and Disseminated Intravascular Coagulopathy

Tong Carmen, Chin Hsuan, Lim Yvonne, Gerard Leong and Lim Yeong Phang

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: February 23, 2019

Amniotic fluid embolism is a rare but catastrophic complication of pregnancy. We describe our institutional experience with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) use in a pregnant women who presented with amniotic fluid embolism and was complicated by disseminated intravascular coagulopathy and postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) who subsequently developed left ventricular failure requiring ECMO therapy. In this report we describe the effective value of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in the successful treatment of a patient with amniotic fluid embolism with uterine conserving management of ...

Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma during Complete Remission of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (M4Eo) Exhibiting Immunoglobulin Heavy Chain Gene Rearrangement and Inv(16)

Kodai Kuriyama, Hiroki Hosoi, Masaya Shimanuku, Toshiki Mushino, Shogo Murata, Akinori Nishikawa, Shinobu Tamura, Nobuyoshi Hanaoka and Takashi Sonoki

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: January 25, 2019

In previous studies, it has been reported that 10-20% of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cases showed immunoglobulin heavy chain gene (IGH) rearrangements, a genetic hallmark of B-cell differentiation. However, the clinical significance of this is uncertain. Here, we report a case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) after complete remission (CR) from AML that exhibited an IGH rearrangement. The patient was diagnosed with AML (M4Eo) with inversion of chromosome 16 [inv(16)]. Interestingly, the AML cells showed a monoallelic IGH rearrangement, as detected by the Southern blot analysis. The rea...

A Medical Case Masquerading as Surgical Pathology in an Individual Living with Diabetes

Ravikumar Ravindran and Kofi Obuobie

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: January 21, 2019

Diagnosing the cause of abdominal pain in a young type 1 diabetic can be a challenging task and involves a wide array of differential diagnosis. Most commonly the pain is thought to be secondary to diabetic neuropathy. It becomes even more problematic if there is significant weight loss, if extensive investigations have not found any organic pathology and if the pain does not fit into any pattern of diabetic neuropathy. We present such a case where a young 21-years-old female diabetic had lost 16 kgs in 6 months due to diffuse left sided abdominal pain with radiation to the back. It was also a...

Utilizing Extended Red Blood Cell Parameters to Distinguish Iron-Deficient Erythropoiesis - Related Disorders in Malaysian Female Population

Angeli Ambayya, Andrew Octavian Sasmita, Subramanian Yegappan and Jameela Sathar

Article Type: Research Article | First Published: January 20, 2019

The full blood count (FBC) analyzers, Sysmex XE-5000 and Unicel DxH 800, are equipped to perform routine and extended parameters tests; thus, this study considered extended red blood cell (eRBC) parameters to distinguish iron-deficient erythropoiesis related disorders. Malaysian female subjects comprising three main ethnic groups (Malay, Chinese and Indian) were included. Three groups of findings were distinguished based on FBC, morphology, and iron status of the subjects: normal, latent iron deficiency (LID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Spearman's correlation test was performed to assess...

Maternal satisfaction on institutional delivery service is the most frequently reported indicator in the evaluation of the quality of maternity services. While increasing service availability and maintaining acceptable quality standards, it is important to assess maternal satisfaction with care in order to make it more responsive and culturally acceptable, ultimately leading to enhanced utilization and improved outcomes. Maternal satisfaction determines the level of institutional delivery service utilization. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the determinants of maternal satisfact...
