Graulich T, Ringe BP, Wilhelmi M, Zwirner U, Krettek C and Wilhelmi M

Article Type: CASE REPORT | First Published: February 26, 2019

A 30-year-old healthy man was brought to our level-one trauma center after a high-velocity trauma. While riding a quad he was hit by a car with about 60 km/h. Initial scores of Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and injury severity score (ISS) were 15. Extremity trauma with moderate craniocerebral injury and abdominal trauma with splenic and hepatic laceration was diagnosed. During follow up on the intensiv...

Isolated Duodenal Variceal Bleeding Caused by Liver Cirrhosis: One Case Report

Lili Liu, Rui HUA, Yu Pan and Junqi Niu

Article Type: CASE REPORT | First Published: February 25, 2019

Isolated Duodenal varices (DV) as a rare manifestation of portal hypertension in the absence of esophagogastric varices. The clinical features of DV include middle-aged men and commonly with a history of liver disease, repeatedly, a large number of acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding with or without esophageal varices. An initial bleed from a duodenal varix often confers a poor prognosis. This i...

Multimodal AGuIX® Nanoparticles: Size Characterization by HF5 and Optimization of the Radiolabeling with Various SPECT/PET/Theranostic Tracers

S Huclier-Markai, E Ntsiba, E Thomas, C Alliot, CS Cutler, F Luxc and O Tillement

Article Type: RESEARCH ARTICLE | First Published: February 25, 2019

Diagnostics that combine imaging techniques such as PET and MRI could enhance disease detection and location if effective multimodal contrast agents can be developed. A nanoparticle called AGuIX has been developed that is comprised of gadolinium-bound by chelates and additional free chelates that can be further labelled with radioactive isotopes enabling both PET and MRI imaging. Herein, we descri...

Family History of Breast Cancer Associated with Breast Cancer in Survivors of Hodgkin Lymphoma

Sarah Colonna, Karen Curtin, Eric Johnson, Wendy Kohlmann, Jennifer Wright, Anne Kirchhoff, Sean Tavtigian and Joshua Schiffman

Article Type: ORIGINAL RESEARCH | First Published: February 25, 2019

Advances in treatments for Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) have significantly increased survival of childhood and adult patients; however, the leading cause of death in HL survivors is due to secondary malignancy following HL treatment. Among women treated for HL, breast cancer (BC) is the most common secondary malignancy. We explored if an association exists between HL and BC exists within families. ...

Teamwork and Patient Education as Tools to the Reduce Overuse of Antibiotics - An Interview Study with Nursing Students at Hanoi Medical University

Kristin Andersen Ljungdahl, RN, BSc, Frida Swedenfeldt, RN, BSc and Kristina Rosengren, PhD, RN

Article Type: ORIGINAL ARTICLE | First Published: February 25, 2019

The overuse of antibiotics due to poor health and suffering is a threat to global health. In Vietnam, overuse is a widespread problem because of the high availability of antibiotics and lack of knowledge about their use, and nurses have a significant role in informing and helping patients experience higher levels of health and well-being. The aim of this study was to describe Vietnamese nursing st...

An Unusual Thrombosis Mimicking Cor Triatriatum Dextra

Murat Surucu, MD, Hazım Alper Gursu and I Ilker Cetin

Article Type: CASE REPORT | First Published: February 25, 2019

Central venous catheters are commonly used in clinical practice. Right atrial thrombosis is a relatively common complication associated with indwelling catheter use. Thrombosis can be in different locations and forms within vascular and intracardiac structures. Echocardiographic images may mimic some anatomic and pathologic variants. We describe a case of a two-months-old girl with a thrombus whic...

Article Type: RESEARCH ARTICLE | First Published: February 25, 2019

Renin-angiotensin system antagonists are the mainstays of blood pressure (BP) lowering strategies in people with diabetes. Perindopril a long half-life Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitor offers the advantage of a single daily dose, usually empirically taken in the morning. We therefore aimed to assess the influence of time of administration on the effect of Perindopril on circadian BP in type 2 diabetes (T2D) individuals with previously untreated stage 1 hypertension. Twenty T2D patients (9 being women) with a mean age of 58.7 years, newly diagnosed with stage 1 hypertension, were r...

Severe MTX Toxicity in Rheumatic Diseases - Analysis of 22 Cases

Bergner R, Wadsack D and Loffler C

Article Type: REVIEW ARTICLE | First Published: Febrayry 25, 2019

Severe MTX (methotrexate) toxicity due to low dose MTX used in rheumatic diseases is rare but linked with a high mortality ranging from 13 to 44%. We analyzed 22 cases with a minimum toxicity of CTC (common toxicity criteria) grade 2, that were admitted to our hospital. We retrospectively analyzed epidemiological data, the weekly MTX dosage, renal function before and at the beginning of the adverse event, co-medication with influence on MTX toxicity or on renal function and potential other co-factors like infections, as well as the outcome, respectively....

Cancer Immunotherapy Therapeutic Manipulation of the CD8-HLA Class I Interaction: Potential and Challenges

P Savage

Article Type: REVIEW ARTICLE | First Published: February 23, 2019

The interaction between CD8 and HLA class I is largely monomorphic and of low affinity. Previous HLA mutation studies have indicated that manipulation of the affinity of this interaction can have dramatic biological effects. Reductions in CD8-HLA class I affinity can lead to inhibition of T cell mediated target cell killing, whilst modest affinity increases lead to enhanced target cell killing whi...
