High Prevalence of Epilepsy in Onchocerciasis Endemic Communities of Ngie: Lack of Association with Taeniasis but Strong Indicators of Hereditary Factors and Characteristics of Onchocerciasis Associated Epilepsy Observed

Raphael Awah Abong, Fongoh Ayong Hassan, Tatsinkou Betrand Fossi, Peter Ndefon, Theresa Nkuo-Akenji, Samuel Wanji and Anong Damian Nota

Article Type: Original Article | First Published: November 12, 2018

Epilepsy, a neurological condition which affects individuals of all ages has been widely reported to be caused by parasitic, fungal, bacterial or viral infectious diseases of the Central Nervous System (CNS). Taenia solium infection otherwise known as neurocysticercosis in taeniasis endemic zones, Onchocerca volvulus infection in onchocerciasis meso/hyperendemic areas in Africa and other infectious agents have been highly incriminated in different parts of the world. Epilepsy remains an important but neglected public health problem in many countries. Ngie sub division is endemic for onchocerci...

Intravenous Subdissociative-Dose Ketamine versus Morphine for Acute Traumatic Pain in Geriatric Patients in the Emergency Department: A Case Series

Sergey Motov, Jefferson Drapkin, Antonios Likourezos, Peter Flom, Catsim Fassassi, John Marshall and Ronald Simon

Article Type: Case series | First Published: November 12, 2018

We compare analgesic efficacy and safety of sub-dissociative dose ketamine (SDK) to morphine for managing acute traumatic pain in geriatric emergency department (ED) patients. A subset of geriatric patients from a randomized double-blind trail experiencing moderate to severe acute traumatic pain who received SDK at 0.3 mg/kg or morphine at 0.1 mg/kg by short intravenous infusion over 15 minutes was analyzed at 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes post-medication administration. Primary outcome was reduction in pain at 30 minutes. Secondary outcomes included adverse effects and incidence of rescue a...

Polyposis disorders of the bowel in the pediatric population are associated with elevated risks of various cancers. The most common sites of the malignancies were the gastrointestinal system, breast, gynecological organs, testis, pancreas and lung. Testicular lesions are often overlooked as PJS predominantly appear in females. A 9-year-old boy was presented to gastroenterology policlinic due to pa...

Optimizing the Anatomic Reduction of Complex Acetabular Fractures: A Technical Enhancement to the Modified Stoppa Approach

J Diranzo Garcia, L Hernandez Ferrando, V Estrems Diaz, V Zarzuela Sanchez, L Castillo Ruiperez, A Vilatela Gomez and A Bru Pomer

Article Type: Technical | First Published: November 12, 2018

In spite of the large variety of different techniques available for their treatment, acetabular fractures still pose a formidable challenge to the orthopedic surgeon, with a close relationship having been observed between degree of reduction, radiological findings and clinical results. The purpose of this manuscript is to introduce a technical enhancement that can be resorted to following exposure...

Enucleation of Ameloblastoma - Case Report of 16-Year-Old Male

Anusha A Hennedige, Dimitrios Doumpiotis and Syed Ahad

Article Type: Case Report | First Published: November 12, 2018

Ameloblastomas are benign, locally invasive, polymorphic neoplasms that consist of proliferating odontogenic epithelium (usually of a follicular or plexiform pattern) lying in a fibrous stroma. They are known to have a high recurrence rate and are sometimes managed aggressively with radical surgery which usually involves wide resections and free flap reconstruction. Here we present a case report i...

Pretreatment Neutrophil-To-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) as a Prognostic Factor of Outcome for Patients with Oral Cavity Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Single Institution Experience

Ashraf Farrag, ArifShaukat, Muhammad Ali and MagdyKandil

Article Type: Original Article | First Published: November 10, 2018

Pretreatment Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been correlated with survival outcome in different types of cancers. In this study we evaluated the prognostic significance of pretreatment NLR in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). We retrospectively collected the clinical and epidemiological data of all biopsy proven, non-metastatic OSCC treated in our center between 2009-2015. Pretreatment absolute neutrophils and lymphocytes counts used to obtain NLR. The impact of NLR on overall (OS) and progression free survivals (PFS) was investigated in both uni- and multivariate ana...

Neuregulins, a family of EGF-like signaling molecules, are involved in cell-cell crosstalk and play an important role in development, maintenance and repair of the nervous system, heart, breast and other organs. Independent studies described a ligand for the oncogene ErbB2 (neu, Her2) and factors that stimulated proliferation of Schwann cells, as well as synthesis of receptors for acetylcholine by muscle. These ligands and factors are essentially products of the same gene, referred to by Marchionni M. as neuregulin (NRG-1)....

Suction capability in neurosurgery is a critical tool utilized to clear the field and improve visualization of anatomical structures. It is also used for fragmentation and debulking of pathological tumor masses. Prior to the Frazier cannula, there was no orifice bent pressure relief valve associated with suction; this tool provides independent dual suction force. The Frazier cannula has the capabi...

Training of French Nursing Students on Drawing Blood Culture: Results from a Broad Electronic Survey

Barbara Alves and Romain Jouffroy

Article Type: Original Article | First Published: November 08, 2018

Early implementation of appropriate treatments reduces mortality of sepsis, but before starting antibiotherapy, drawing blood culture is essential to identify the source of sepsis and to adapt treatment. Suboptimal practices result in blood culture contamination from patient's skin at the venepuncture site. As blood culture is the standard method to diagnose a bacteraemia, appropriate training of nursing students can promote good clinical practice. This study aims to evaluate the teaching and the training of French nursing students on blood culture execution and related hygiene practices....
